Seek information re ancestry of Joseph Severance, who resided in Dartmouth MA by 1761 (per 1761 tax list), residing in the area of present day Acushnet MA. Joseph Severance is also listed in the tax valuation of Dartmouth for 1771. The Bristol County probate file for William Bennett of Dartmouth, who died ca 1773, includes a statement signed by Joseph Severance and Almy Severance in March 1774, they "being neighbors to William Bennett in his lifetime." A marriage was recorded in Dartmouth in 1776 between Joseph Severance and Meribah Howland (a Mayflower descendant), both of Dartmouth.
Almy Bennett was born in Dartmouth in 1737, daughter of Jeremiah and Lydia (Gray) Bennett. Jeremiah was a brother of William Bennett, the above decedent. There is no record of the marriage or death of Almy Bennett. During the war years of 1758-1761, only 4 marriages were recorded in Dartmouth, which may account for the lack of a record. No other marriage-eligible female of the name "Almy" was known to reside in the vicinity of Dartmouth during this period. Assuming that Joseph Severance married Almy Bennett, and that Joseph Severance was about the same age, it would indicate that Joseph was born say 1735.
The 1761 and 1771 tax lists for Dartmouth list Joseph as the only Severance in the town, and each year he is listed with only one poll (male above 16 years of age), indicating that the Joseph Severance of Dartmouth who married Meribah Howland there in 1776 is likely the same man who was previously married to Almy.
