Sergeant of Captain Juan Ruiz, native of the city of Zacatecas, tall, scanty beard, pock marked, 40 years of age, son of Hern‡n MARTíN Serrano, with complete armor for himself and horse. He is taking his wife and family.

Hern‡n Mart’n Serrano came with the original O–ate colony of 1598. He was then forty years old, the son of Hern‡n Mart’n Serrano and a native of Zacatecas, tall of stature, sparse-bearded and pockmarked. He is designated in the 1597 muster-roll as the Sargento of the Expedition. His wife, Juana Rodr’guez, and family are with him; he has cattle, horses, utensils, and even a millstone.
In 1626, Capit‡n Hern‡n Mart’n Serrano, seventy years of age, was considered an ancient settler and resident of Santa FŽ. He had two sons, Hern‡n II and Luis. Mar’a Mart’n, first wife of Alonso Mart’n Barba, was very likely his daughter.

Luis Mart’n Serrano, brother of Hern‡n, was disliked by Governor Mendiz‡bal for his friendship with the friars; he also accused Luis of being the man who broke down the door when Governor Rosas was assassinated. He lived at La Ca–ada, where he allegedly hid an illegitimate child of Governor Manso before it was spirited off to Mexico City.
His wife was Catalina de Salazar,who was a widow by 1663. At this time we learn that Luis had been the Alcalde Mayor and Capit‡n of the Tewa jurisdiciton. Catalina was very likely a daughter of Capit‡n Sebasti‡n Rodr’guez de Salazar. Luis descendants can be distingueshed from those of his brother Hern‡n becuae they sometimes appended her Salazar name to that of their father.

Luis Mart’n Serrano II escaped the 1680 massacre with his wife and twelve children, four of these being sons of military age. Luis held the rank of Capit‡n. The next year he gave his age as forty-eight or fifty, and declared that a son of his , eighteen years old, was ready to bear arms. He himself was described as a native of New Mexico, married, having a good, slender physique, dark complexion, black hair and beard, and a mole on his left cheek. Two sons who were described as his were Antonio, twenty-six, and Luis, Òthe YoungerÓ, thirty-four; both were married.
His wife was Antonia de Miranda, as we learn from later sources. Their children were, besides Luis III and Antonio, another who has been identified as Francisco. Two daughters are also known: Mar’a, wife of Antonio Luj‡n, and Mar’a Rosa, who married Nicol‡s L—pez. 1

Federal 1860 census lists Manuel(probably enumerator error in understanding name) Serrano & wife, Nepomucena in Torreon. At that time, they had six children. Daughter, Amada, was 16.
In 1870 census, they have moved to Puerto de Luna and have two more daughters, Consuela and Candelaria. Amada is no longer in the household.
Military: Served as a Sergeant in the Civil War in PereaÕs Battalion, New Mexico Militia, US Army
1861-1862. Participated in the battle at Valverde, 20-22 Feb 1862.
