The Sephardic connection is really interesting and thanks for sharing that. Does anyone else out there have a French background? Apparently our branch of Serra comes from Chateauguay, Quebec, where they were alternately known as Serat or Sirois. In 1900 Treffle Serra and Clarinda Grenier immigrated to New Bedford, Mass. The name was always Serra after that. Even so, there are direct relatives in the Montreal area with the spelling we use - Serra. My hunch is that they were illiterate and were assigned a common surname spelling. There were many Italian and Portuguese Serra names in New Bedford. Anyone else have any French background?
