Hello! Yes, both sources are very important in the dates, names, places and events. What an informative description and history you have provided! This is something else. I have some biographical sketches from the 1928 biography of Los Angeles County businessmen that includes Dodson, Jr., and Sr. Very interesting are their stories! This was obtained from the San Diego FHC. As you might have discovered in your viewing of my previous postings and most probably from viewing my family tree on Ancestry.com, my "Berrey, Harrison, Holtz families" have been associated with the histories of San Pedro, Wilmington, and Long Beach only about 100 years. Your family heritage goes back at least 150 years in southern California! The two books you mentioned... 1. "A History of California and an Extended History of its Southern Coast Counties" was also printed with Biographies, volume II. I have printing information on this as follows: Los Angeles, Calif.:Historic Record Co., 1907, 1845-6. Fallbrook District Map (Fox's Map), Map Section, SDHS Archives. 2. "History of the Harbor District of Los Angeles" was published by the Historic Record Company (early 1920s, I believe). Not sure what library in San Diego County would have copies. I might have to check with UCSD Campus Library, San Diego Family History Center, and the City of San Diego Public Library. Anyway, I have read of Senator Savage's efforts in the incorporation of San Pedro as a city during early 1900s, and have compiled some information to help develop the stories of my ancestors. My great-grandfather (Charles Reuben Berrey) was the assistant manager of the "San Pedro Transportation Company" (foot & ferry service at Front Street). Along with C. R. Berrey, I am quite sure that his business associates at the company (Matthew J. Walsh, Edward "Big Ed" Mahar, and manager Frank E. Garbutt) had many discussions about the political atmosphere surrounding San Pedro during the period of 1907 - 1940. BTW, Frank was a "self-made" tycoon in oil and the silent moving picture industry. He had Matthew build him a schooner that became well-known in the California Yaht Club. I have a number of newspaper articles surrounding Frank Garbutt and his activities, but very little that dealt with the San Pedro Transportation Company. It has been hard for me to find such stories relating to the history of this company. It so happens that this company was politically affiliated with the growth of San Pedro and most likely supported your 2nd great-grandfather (Senator William H. Savage)! Another family tidbit.."Big Ed" Mahar (Michael and Nora E. Mahar) married Ms. Maude Reddy. One of their children was: Ms. Mary E. Mahar (b: 5 July 1909, City of San Pedro, Los Angeles County, CA). It appears Mary never married. She became the godmother of my father: Charles Henry Berrey. Are you familiar with any of the above information? Please let me know because I am building all factual stories about this company, the business associates who worked with my great-grandfather and other interesting historical data about San Pedro and its citizens.
