Andrew, if you read this after all these years since you posted, I have info on your Semple family which I have gleaned from old Court records on the case which wentagainst my ggg grandfather who lived in Hamilton.Your David Semple who married Marion Park Peters was actually the son of William Semple and Christina Dunn. My brother recently purchased the whole transcript of the case from Scottish records office.
Christina's father was James Dunn who had died by 1843 and left a trust deed to her and family.David and Marion both gave evidence and David ran a public house only a very short distance from his mother and father.Nothing is mentioned about any other members of that family in the transcript except that Christina said that when William was missing for a few hours she was going to send her young daughter to search for him. This was on 23rd October 1851. (He was missing for eight days on a bit of a bender)The court proceedings were 1853 and everyone's age and address and spouses were stated as they introduced themselves. It makes interesting reading.
My ggg grandfather had married a cousin of William Semple's (Christina had stated this in evidence) and I am really hoping that I can find who this cousin was.Do you have any names such as King, Weir,McClintock or Rankin in your names pre 1850? My ggg grandfather Smellie or Smalie Frame as he was known was actually William Smellie Frame on his D Cert. born about 1805 and lived in Hamilton had possibly married 4 timesbut our ggg grandmother was Janet King whom he married in Hamilton in 1834.She wasfrom Dalziel. She died 1841c - 1851c and then hemarried Agnes or Ann Weir in Nov. 1850.There were two earlier marriages to Margaret McClintock and Mary Rankine credited to Smellie Frame prior to 1834 in the Hamilton records. There could have been more than one Smellie Frame of course at that time but I don't think it would be the case.He died in 1860. He was named as Smalie Frame on census records and in the court case but William Frame was on the Record.Hope you can reply. Heather
