Selsors of Greene County, Pa and Fort Selsor
I am still searching out the connections of Frederick Selsor to Shenandoah County. I think he was Lewis Selsor's oldest son b. 1758.This would be Mathias Selsor's grandson.
I found original land warrants for Lewis in Greene co. (300 acres) and Fayette Co. (100 acres)in Pa. archives with maps
from 1771.The SYkes were neighbors. Lewis Selsor sold some of the land to Lewis Selssor ..maybe a son or just a transfer from survey to warrant status, The census 1790 says George, Frederick and Jonathan were on these lands in Dunkard Township, Greene Co. and Michael and Christian were on the lands in Fayette co. There was a Fort Selsor near Bobtown in Dunkard township. In the hostory of Greene Co. there is a story of the abduction of Christina Sykes by the indians. Henry Sykes, her brother and his friend young George Selsor help with the family's escape to the safety of Fort Selsor. "Old man " Selsor set his dogs on one indian who escaped. Then the group sought shelter in the stronger fort of Fort Swearigen. Someone had mentioned Fort Swearigen in a Selsor post. It was listed in Va. rather than PA. Also, for supplies during this era of settlement, people went to Winchester across the mountains and Cumberland gap.
I have a copy of Frederick "Selcer" s Rev. War pension application. He was born in Shenandoah in 1758. Served as a Sgt. Orderly from 1778 -1781. He was with Washington at Valley Forge, (there was not a battle of Valley Forge, it was a winter camp) He fought at the Battles of Germantown and Monmouth where he was wounded. He gives a very vivid description of the battle almost 60 years after it occurred. I think his given name was not Frederick but Michael. The only Sgt. I can find who mustered at Easton in Northampton was Michael. Also in that company was George and Phillip Selsor. In addition, in Dunkard County, Barbara b. 1757 and Charlotte Selsor b. abt 1762married two Sykes brothers. Fred states in his pension papers that he resided in Dunkard Twp. Greene Co. up to 1815 when he moved to Richland Co., Ohio. Do you know anything about this group of Selsors? It is this George Selsor who moved to MS and founded Selsertown on the Natchez trace after having difficulty with his land warrant in Pa.Dispute were often settled by fist fights.
