Working Draft of May 26, 2007

Note: This is one of 177 working drafts which are still "rough" and intended for convenient use in comparing, sorting and compiling information about "Selmans". They may have inaccuracies.

Information for these drafts have been contributed by hundreds of Selman descendants beginning with T. L. Selman's research in the 1940s'.

Any copies of old family histories or biographies, photos, old bible records, letters, etc. would be sincerely appreciated. Information about military service, colleges, occupations, public offices, or any other item of interest is welcomed. I'm also trying to add addresses and telephone numbers for all living descendants If you know of other "Selman" families living in your area, please contact them and obtain their family information, have them contact me, or give me their address.

       Thanks for your help!

_______________________________________________________________________________

Abner Selman (1784? - 1833) was born in Virginia. He married his first cousin Millie Selman, a daughter of Thomas and Jemima Selman. Millie was born 12 May 1786 in Spartanburg, S. C. Abner Selman's ancestors are believed to be as follows:

John Sellman (1645-1707). Wife: Elizabeth Brashears.
John Sellman (1680-1716). Wife: Martha Gross.
Benjamin Lawrence Selman. (1710-1774) Wife: Ann Powell.
John Selman. (ca 1760-1827). Wife unknown.
       Abner Selman. Wife: Milly Selman.

Abner was not in the 1805 Georgia Lottery, therefore, he was not 21 years of age in the 1803 registration. Thus, he was born after 1782. In 1807, Abner, Eli and Stafford of Franklin County, Ga., each drew one lot in Wilkinson County, Ga in the 2nd Georgia Land Lottery.

In Jan 1809, according to T. L. Selman, Abner Selman was in Madison County, Ala. with a small, baby daughter. Madison County, Ala. was adjacent to Franklin County, Tn. and the state line may not have been settled.

On 23 July 1810, Abner Selman was commissioned an Ensign with the 32nd Regiment in the Tennessee Militia.        In the book, Enlisted Men, War of 1812 at page 458, it lists the following:

John Sillman, Pvt., Gen. Wm Johnston, Capt Dan'l Oban,        36th Inf.
Thomas Sillman, Pvt. Col Jno Cocke, Capt Sam'l Caruthers,        Inf.
Abner Silmon, Pvt, Col R. H. Dyer, Maj Wm Russell, Capt Wm Russell, vol Mtd Gunmen.
Benjamin Silmon, Pvt. Col R. H. Dyer, Maj Wm Russell, Cap Wm Russell,
              Vol Mtd Gunmen.
Eli Silmon, Pvt, Col Thos Williamson, Capt Jno Hutchings,        Vol Mtd Gunmen.

This needs further research. This list indicates that Abner served in the same Company with his cousin, Benjamin Selman, presumably at the same time. We don't know if Abner was a Private first, and then made an Ensign, or vice-versa. I don't know if the 32nd Regiment was Col. R. H. Dyer's Regiment.

On 27 Jan 1912, Stafford, Abner and Wiley Selman were included on a Petition of the City of Franklin County, Tn. to extend the length of time on which settlers of school lands may hold and improve their property before school lands are sold.

In 1812, the Franklin County, Tennessee Tax and Voter Registration List showed:

                             Stafford Selman
                             Abner Selman
                             Eli Selman
                             Eli Selmon, Jr.
                             Wiley Selmon
                             Thomas Selmon
                             Thomas Selman, Jr.

Abner still owned real property in Franklin County, Ga. next to his father, John Selman and nearby his father-in-law, Thomas Selman in 1813 because The Franklin County, Georgia Tax and Voter List showed:

JNO. Silman: ln. 550a., McClendon, Henson, Nales Ck., 202 1/2., Abner Silmon, unknown, #336, Wilkerson County; 350 a., Tho's Selman, Creswell, Shoal Ck., Elbert County.

The Creswell could be Criswell, a family that married into the Evans Family.

On 8 Aug 1813, Abner Selman was a witness in Franklin County, Tn. to a Power of Attorney from George Adams of Abbeville District, S. C. to John Box of Franklin County, Tn. to sell tracts in Abbeville and Laurens District, S. C. Other witness was Stephen Box. Proved by John King. Certified by A. Russell, Clerk, Franklin, Tenn. Deed Book K, Page 26, Laurens County, S. C.

Abner Selman was appointed Co-Executor of Thomas Selman's Will, signed on 8 Apr 1816 and filed in April 1816 in Franklin County, Tennessee, Will Book 1808 1876, page 12, which read as follows:

"IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN." I, Thomas Silmon of the State of Tennessee and County of Franklin being in a low state of health but in sound mind and memory praised by God calling to mind that it is appointed for all men once to die do hereby make constitute and ordain this my last Will and Testament and first and principally bequeath my soul to Almighty God who gave it me in sure and certain hope of the resurrection to eternal life and by body to the earth fro whence it came to be buried in a decent and Christian like manner at the discretion of my hereinafter mentioned Executors and as to my worldly goods and estate which it hath pleased God to endow me with I give and dispose in the manner and form following. In premise, I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Jemimah and my beloved son Eli my beloved daughter Milly my beloved son Elias my beloved son Thomas my beloved daughter Linney my beloved son Benjamin my beloved daughter Nancy my beloved daughter Dorcas my beloved son Willis my beloved daughter Polly Silmon. I have made a little deduction of som of my children for goods that they have taken from the estate to wit: Thomas Twenty dolars Linney Thirty-Five dollars, Nancy twenty dollars. I bequeath to Elizabeth Greenlease that tract or parcel of land that she is in possession of to a division line that was made between Sd Silmon and Sd Greenlease. I want by beloved wife Jemimah to have full power and authority over what we now possess until her life is called by them that gave it then with the greatest strictness and attention I want every child to have an equal part of my estate and I do appoint my beloved son and hold Abner Selman and James Greenlease the whole and soul Executors of this my last will and testament as witness my hand and seal this the eighth day of April one thousand eight hundred and sixteen.

The S. Selman who witnessed the Will was presumably Stafford Selman, brother to Abner Selman.

By 1820, Abner Selman was listed in the 1820 Census of Pike County, Ms. as follows:

                                   Abner Silman
                     Males:        Under 10 (2) Hiram
                                    26-45 (1) Abner
Females       Under 10 (2) Nancy, Susan
                                   10-16       (1)
                                   26-45       (1) Millie

Thus, Abner was the father of two (2) sons born before 1820, two (2) daughters born before 1820, and a daughter born between 1804 - 1810.

Elias and Thomas Selman, brothers to Millie, wife of Abner Selman, were also in Pike County, Ms. in 1820 in which the Census provides:

                     Elias Silman
                     Males       26-45        (1)
                     Female 16-26       (1)

                     Thomas Silman
                     Males:        Under 10 (4)
                                    26-45 (1)
                     Females       Under 10 (1)
                                   26-45       (1)

On 25 Mar 1827, Abner's father, John Selman died in Franklin County, Ga. without a will.

On 10 Dec 1828, Eli Selman, Abner Selman, Stafford Selman, William Ford, for his wife Karen H. Ford, and William Thomason, husband of Rhena (Selman) Thomason, deceased, surviving children of John Selman, filed with the Superior Court of Franklin County, Georgia a petition requesting that the administration of the estate by John Selman, Jr. be set aside.

The 1830 Census of Hinds County, Ms. lists Abner Selman as follows:

              Males
                     1770-1790 (1) - Abner
                     1790-1810 (1)
                     1810-20 (2) Hiram 1815
                      1820-30 (3) Eli 1821, Willis R. 1824
                                                  Wesley 1828)

              Female
                     1810-20 (2)        Nancy 1818, Susan 1814
                     1790-1810 (1) - Millie

Thus, the daughter, born between 1804-1809 is gone.

Abner Selman was listed on the Tax Lists for Hinds County, Ms. for 1830 and 1831.

Millie obtained a certificate on 8 Oct 1832 #8475, for which she paid $100.41, and obtained 80.35 acres in Hinds County, Ms. (Folk) She lived adjacent to Thomas Selman.

Abner Selman died by 27 February 1833, when an Indenture was signed between Milly Selman, wife of Abner Selman, deceased, late of the County of Hinds, Ms. and natural guardian of his heirs and Thomas Selman of the County of Hinds wherein for the sum of $25.00 a tract of land was conveyed to Thomas Selman located in Hinds County, Ms. Attested: A. G. Moore.

According to T. L. Selman, an A. B. Selman bought land in Hinds County, Ms. in 1837-1838. This may be Anderson B. Selman.

In the 1840 Hinds County, Mis¬sissippi Census, at page 216 Millie Selman, born be¬tween 1780-1790 and four sons are as follows:

                     Born between 1810-1820       (Hiram)
                     Born       between 1820-1825       (Willis Reynolds)
                     Born between 1820-1825       (Eli)
                     Born between 1825-1830(Wesley)

In the 1850 Census of Hinds County, Ms. it shows:

Milley Sallman age 66       farmer       Ga.
                     Wesley "               22        "              Ms.

In a letter dated 18 Sep 1937 from Bertha Louise (Mrs. J. D. Carlisle of W. Monroe, Louisiana to Aunt Gladye (Mrs. C. E. Selman of Sontag, Ms.) she said:

Aunt Fannie said her father was named Willis Reynolds Selman, his father was Abner Selman. He (Abner Selman) had two brothers, one named William and the other Thomas...His brother, Thomas, lived in Texas and Arkansas. William had no children, but Thomas has several sons who left this country during the Civil War.

My father, Willis Reynolds Selman, had two brothers and two sisters. The boys were Thomas and Reuben, the sisters were Betsy and Nancy. I don't know what became of the boys. Betsy married a man by the name of Johnston and moved to Arkansas.

In a letter dated 17 Sep 1937, W. A. Selman of P. O. Box 127, Tallahassee, Fla. wrote Rev. T.L. Selman, as follows:

My grandfather Selman (I do not know his given name) died in 1820 when my father was three or four years old. My grandmother then brought up the four children, two boys and two girls, Susan, Nancy, Willis Reynolds and Eli. The oldest, Susan married a Mr. Johnson and moved to North Louisiana about 1840. Nancy married a Mr. Lucas, and their daughter, Adaline, married Nick Williams. After Lucas died, Nancy married William Dennis as you have noted. Long after the death of Mr. Dennis, Nick Williams and wife (Adaline) lived with Nancy and her son, Jimmie Dennis, who was four months my senior. I visited them often.

My father's brother, Eli, died about 1850, never married.

My father, Willis Reynolds, went to Alabama to oversee the farm of his uncle, Thomas Selman. There he met and married Catherine Baker, then went back to the old home in Hinds County. From there, they went to Copiah County in 1861, and to Lawrence County in 1868.

Another source suggests it was Uncle William. Whether Uncle Thomas or Uncle William, Mary Crawford D. Folk states that it was probably Uncle Eli in Franklin County, Ala. that Willis worked for.

According to Jimmie Dennis, Wesley lost his mind and died in a Jackson Hospital. In his notes, T. L. stated:

The controversy is carried on by three grandchildren: - Mrs. Carlisle of Monroe, La. a daughter of Susan claims Ruben Selman to be a son of Abner. Jimmie Dennis of Raymond, Ms. a son of Nancy (died in Jul 1938) claims Hiram and Wesley Selman both were sons of Abner - Dennis says it was Wesley that lost his mind, and that Hiram was in the Mexican War. W. A. Selman of Tallahassee, Fla. a son of Willis Reynolds Selman mentioned only four children - Susan, Nancy, Willis Reynolds and Eli Selman. He says it was Eli that lost his mind, and that he died about 1850 without ever marrying. ...When the estate was settled in 1860, only four heirs were living. Three of them were Susan, Nancy and Willis Reynolds Selman. I have never been able to learn who the fourth heir was.

In a "History of Abner Selman" written by William Joseph Selman after 1975, he stated:

We know Wesley was born 1828, Willis R. 1824, Thomas 1820, Nancy 1819, Eli 1815, Hiram 1813, and Susan Elizabeth 1811.

Eli, the son of Abner, joined the Palestine Church in 1844 or 1845. He enlisted in the Mexican War and died of sickness in the army 1846. Tommie, the son of Thomas, was with him. Abner died about 1839 when 58 or 59 years old. Milly died 1859, 75 years old. The estate of Abner and Milly was divided in 1860 between Susan Elizabeth Johnson, Nancy Dennis, Willis R. Selman and we judge, the other one to be Wesley Selman, as only four participated in the division.

Millie and Abner lived near Raymond, fifteen miles southeast of Jackson. They both were buried in Hinds County.

In my best judgment, Abner and Millie Selman had eight (8) children, as follows:

              I.       Daughter Selman. Born between 1804-10.
II.       Susan Elizabeth (Selman) Johnson. Born 1814.
III.       Hiram G. Selman. Born 1815 in Ga.

VII.       Willis Reynolds Selman Born 22 Feb 1824.
              VIII.       Wesley Selman. Born 1828.

Information concerning the descendants of Abner and Milly Selman, is as follows:

Johnston to be her attorney in fact in reference to the settlement of her father, Abner Sellman's estate, late of Hinds County, Ms.'s estate.

Died on 17 Aug 1846 at mouth of Rio Grande.

On 12 Sep 1848, Amelia Selman, mother of Eli Selman in Claim for Bounty Land stated, under oath, that:
