CARRELs of PA and Jefferson Co, OH, ca. 1798-1814
Who raised Anthony Wayne CARROLL (CARREL)?
My 3xGreat Grandfather Anthony Wayne CARROLL was born somewhere in western Pennsylvania 20 February 1806.Anthony’s parents were Philip and Mary CARREL who with their nine children John (b. 1798), Mary, Margaret, Joseph, Anthony, Catherine, Henry, Jane and Philip Jr. (b. about 1813) lived in Jefferson County, Ohio in 1813.The father Philip Carrel died in December 1813 while in the service of the United States during the War of 1812, and the Court in Steubenville administered his Estate.
When word of his death reached Mary she released Anthony Wayne, who was 7 years old, into the custody of a well-off neighbor or family acquaintance to raise as his own child. The Court later appointed Ephraim CELLERS as guardian for the four eldest of the remaining children in 1814.Other names mentioned in the Court documents include John HENDERSON, John WOLF, Abraham CRABB and Jacob SHELL. Young Anthony thus became separated from his family at an early age, and later claimed to have been raised in Central Ohio.Anthony resurfaced in Granville, Licking County, Ohio in 1826 when he married Balinda ROOT, a daughter of Noble Root and Damaris BARRETT.
I am seeking any information on the whereabouts in Central Ohio of Anthony Wayne Carroll (Carrel) between 1813 and 1826, between the ages of 7 and 20 years of age, and of who may have raised him there.I am also seeking any information about what may have happened to his eight brothers and sisters and his mother Mary.Possibly Philip Jr. married a FELTENBERGER in Harrison Co, OH in 1832.
