Great post, thank you Sharon.

In searching for the father of Thomas Segraves of Maury/Giles County, TN I have discovered numerous and similar documents: Sally Rigsby's widow's claim, Mary, mother of Thomas's claim for land granted in Arkansas, Capt. Baker's journal -- in which there may be a second reference to a Segraves, possibly Isaac? I have only stumbled on the Allen County Segraves in the past year as a result of beginning to track down the multiple statements in Sally's claim, some of which are in direct conflict about what we believe we know about Thomas Segraves of Maury County, TN, deceased husband of Sarah and father of Alfred, et. al.

Given that Sally claims to have married Thomas in Allen County (and she and counsel failed even at the time of her application to secure a copy of the marriage certificate), and that Scottville (Allen County) is stamped on Mary's, mother of Thomas and on behalf of his heirs, claim -- that Thomas would appear to be one and the same Thomas -- unless there are two Thomases of Allen County, KY which served in the War of 1812 and presumably died in that conflict.

Yet, the Thomas of Maury County -- whom many believe to be the brother of Isaac (Bennett, Vincent, et. al) and son of Jacob Segraves of Wake County, NC, and who, according to his descendants died in the War of 1812 -- had children. This creates a bit of a puzzle given the testimony in Sally Rigsby's claim that she and her husband Thomas had no children.

Moreover I recently found a copy of the U.S. Army registry referencing the service Thomas Segraves of Allen County, KY, and debatably one and the same as Thomas of Maury County, TN and cites his birth as Botetourt, VA. Date of death and service is consistent with Capt. Bakers' Journal.

I have previously shared it with others on the forum, but for the convenience of the many hands necessary to resolve these Allen County, KY/ Giles-Maury County, TN/ Botetourt County, VA and Wake County/ NC relationships, here is the most recent piece to add to yours.

Source:
Register of Enlistments in the U.S. Army, 1798-1914; (National Archives Microfilm Publication M233, 81 rolls); Records of the Adjutant General’s Office, 1780’s-1917, Record Group 94.

9. Thomas Segraves Seagraves
Rank = Rect. (presumably recruit)
Service = U.S.I. (presumably Infantry v. Army
Age = 32 (estimated birth = 1782)
Born = Botatort, VA (sic)
Enlistment = April 20, 1814 in Columbia, TN for the duration of the War
Remarks: R.R. N. Orleans May 31,1814; died 20 Aug 1814; Priv. in Cap. Baker's Co. See P.C. 25883

In August 1815 Thomas Segraves' will was recorded by Sarah Segraves, adminitrix, in the Maury County Court. In February 1816 according to the Goodspeed History of Maury Co., the Commissary Court of Maury County at its meeting on the 3rd Monday of February was looking for a home for the "orphaned sons of Thomas Seagraves- Alfred, Harvey, and Jefferson."

The Registrants referenced pension claim 25883 refers to that of Mary, mother of one Thomas Segraves on behalf of herself and his heirs, Bounty Land Warrant
Patentee Name: Segraves, Mary
Warrantee Name: Segraves, Thomas
Accession Number: AR3010__.512
State: Arkansas
Volume: 3010
Page: 512
Document Number: 25883
Land Office: Arkansas
Aliquot Part Reference: SE
Section Number: 22
Township: 1 South
Range: 1 East
Meridian/Survey Area: Fifth Principal Meridian
Act/Treaty Authorizing Sale: Scrip-Warrant Act of 1812
Date Signed: 5 Jun 1826
Acreage: 160.00
One document in the file found at NARA reveals reference to Scottville, KY -- linking this "mother Mary" to Allen County, KY.

I have tried and thus far failed to determine the status of that AR land, whether it was claimed, sold or otherwise disposed of. I believe it is located in present day Phillips County, AR, perhaps 1 hour east south east of where Alfred's son Reuben homesteaded north of Black Rock, Lawrence County, Arkansas. The names of those heirs and the ultimate disposition of that land granted in the bounty claim may shed additional light.

Re Sally Rigsby's claim, I continue to scratch my head repeatedly when reading all the documents contained within the NARA file. Happy to share a transcription of the entire file upon request and work with any and all Segraves researchers to sort out the clans from Botetourt, Wake, Allen and Maury areas.

Sherry
