Carey, You are deep into the mysteries of our most difficult period in the family genealogy. I will applaud you highly if you have managed to sort out any of these folks. I believe that the John Segraves, Sr. shown on the 1790 census in the Hillsborough District of wake Co., NC is the John Segraves described in the DAR Patriot Index as born in NC in 1738 and died 28 July 1823. According to the same source he married Sarah Priddy. That marriage occurred in 1779 according to "Hick's History of Granville Co., NC" Vol I and "Marriage Bonds of Granville Co., NC 1753-1868". I believe that this John is the one who enlisted in Capt. John Summer's Company, 1st NC Battalion, on 7 May 1776 for 2 1/2 years service according to "North Carolina State Records" Vol 15, page 728. Vol 17, page 246, of the same source shows an Abstract of the Army Accounts of the North Carolina Line, settled by the Commission at Halifax in 1784, 1785,and 1786 which lists John Seagraves, Senr. paid 41 L. 15 s. 1 d. ( also listed are John Seagraves and John Seagraves, Junr. The DAR Patriot Index shows that John, Sr. had a son William, born in 1768, who married a Leah Sealey in 1798. The John, Jr., born about 1765, who later married a Mary Woodward, is likely his son as well. It is possible, but not confirmed, that he is the John in Anson Co., NC in 1800 through 1820. I show Burrell as being born in the 1770s and appearing on the 1820 census in Madison Co., GA and on the 1830 census in Gwinnett Co., GA. I have no source that shows him as a son of John, Sr. The William Segraves you refer to as born in 1786 seems close to the William, born in 1787 in Wake Co., NC who married Frances Rebecca Edwards in 1812. I show that William as a son of William and Polly from a note sent by Eugenie Balentine in August 1999. I think that if John, Sr. had a son named William it was the one born in 1768 mentioned earlier. The William Segraves on the 1820 census in Anson Co. would have been born between 1776 and 1794. I have no way of determining whether he is the same person that appears on the 1830, 1840 and 1850 censuses in Madison Co., GA. If you have a source on this person, please let me know. I am also not sure how you've determined that Parthena is related to John, Sr., or to the Patsey in 1830 Madison Co., GA. It is possible that John, Sr. married a Patsey at some point, but I have no record of it. There is another John Seagraves in NC during this period who is easy to confuse with John, Sr. This second John was born about 1761 in NC according to his pension application in "The Genie" of the Ark-La-Tex Genealogical Association, Inc., Shreveport, LA Vol 12 #1, Jan 1978. I believe that this second John married Pheobe Cook in Granville Co., NC in June 1781 according to "Marriages of Granville Co., NC, 1753-1868". I think he is the John on the 1830 census in Surry Co., NC. To confuse matters more, there is another John, born is the 1780s in Nc who married a Polly Barker in Wake Co., NC on 21 April 1810. They had a son, Littleton B. Seagraves, born about 1814 in NC. I would love to sort these Johns out once and for all. If you have some more definitive sources taht will help, please share.
