The young girl in this article was actually named Hattie Segars. She was the daughter of Joshua Harris Segars and Ara Anna Hunton.Hattie was delivering lunch to her half-brother, John Wesley Segars, who worked as a brakeman. The train that had been due earlier in the morning was actually running late that day due to another delay further up the track.Hattie, unaware of the delay, stepped onto the tracks just when the train came in.She was flown as high as a boxcar and broke both of her arms and legs upon landing on the gound. She lived for a very short time before succumbing to her injuries.
Hattie was the sister of my g-g-grandmother, Carrie Belle Segars.
