Dana,
The Segars family that I am researching came out of Sampson and Cumberland Counties, North Carolina. The earliest ancestory known to me is a man I refer to as John Segars, Sr., (many variations of spelling)born about 1740.His wife was Drishey. One of their sons was Southward Segars, Sr., who was twice married with children by both wives.I have photocopies of his family bible pages wherein his children and wives are identified with birthdates.
This family left North Carolina and settled for a time in Gwinett County, Georgia northeast of present day Atlanta. They later moved to Early County, Georgia and then into Southeast Alabama. Some members of the family stayed in Gwinett County and account for the many Segars descendants in Georgia.
Southward Segars, Sr. is one of the lines that went to Early County, Georgia.Ira Segars, born 1 Feburary 1798 was the son of Southward Segars, Sr. and his first wife Sarah "Sallie" (nee?) Segars.Southward Sr. must have died in Georgia. There is no known record of his moving into Alabama.
Ira's wife Elizabeth's maiden name is unknown to me.I have checked, first hand, the records in Sampson and Cumberland Counties, North Carolina and Gwinett County, Georgia with no success.
Ira moved his family from Early County, Georgia to (present day) Barbour County, Alabama earlier than the remainder of the family. He probably came in just after resolution of the first conflict with the Creek Indians.
As you noted, his daughter, Lettie, married Isaac Benton. This fact is well documented in "Memorial Record of Alabama."In this article, it is mentioned that Ira had five sons, all fought in the war(CSA).I have been unsuccessful in proving that Hugh R. Segars and Matthew Segars in Pike County, Alabama were his sons.(Recall that Barbour County Alabama was created from a portion of eastern Pike county.)But, without them, the five sons are unaccounted for.Hugh's and Matthew's birth years fit perfectly in Ira's family as Lettie's brothers.
You may contact me at [email protected] if you need any information that I have.
Jerry
