Leah,

It is possible that your Thomas Sidgwick was related to the Sidgwicks of Gibbs Hall, Banklands, Dent. Christian names seem to be passed down in each branch of the Sidgwick/Sedgwick.

My ancestor Thomas Sidgwick was born in Dent in 1520, but the family continued to live in Dent for many generations. As St.Andrew's church was owned and controlled by the monastery of Coverham Abbey in pre Church of England times, it is likely that the brighter sons of the family would have become Catholic priests and gone to Cambridge, like Adam Sedgwick much later. It would appear from the entry in the Catholic Encyclopedia that your Thomas did not accept the authority of the new Church of England, he is described as "learned but not very wise".
The devout Catholic parishioners of Dent in the reign of Henry VII were very active in the religious rebellion of the Pilgrimage of Grace. The history of Kettewill Village by Arthur Raistrick, relates that 6,000 men of Dentdale and round about formed an army and marched on Preston where the Duke of Norfolk met them and persuaded them to go home.

Of course this is pure surmise, as living in South Australia slows me down in hans-0n research. Hopefully someone researching Sedgwicks in Dentdale can dig deeper.

Regards
Crichton
