Hi Andrew

This is very confusing as I was beginning to think that Edward must be the father! By looking at the Trade directories here - http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/WRY/Leeds/index.html - it shows that in 1834 Edward was a pipe maker but by 1837 Maria is listed assumedly after Edward died.

Also in the National Burial Index, there is the burial of another William Varley Sedgwick in 1818 aged 2.

I wonder whether Maria is the Maria Sedgwick baptised in 1796 the daughter of Edward Sedgwick and Elizabeth Marshall or whether she was also a Varley?

I shall keep looking.

Nicky
