Morton Palms, nr Darlington and Dallowgill nr Ripon
William Francis SEDGWICK married Rebecca A. RUTTER at the Parish Church, Denton, Darlington. He gave his age as 31 (so born about 1863), residence as Houghton-le-Side, and occupation as Farmer. Frustratingly, no father's name is given.
I can't find a William Francis in the 1881 Census - but can find a Francis SIDGEWICK, aged 17, farmer's son at Houghton-le-Side.This still doesn't help with his father, as the head of the household is unmarried 34 year old Thomas SIDGEWICK, farming with his 28 year old brother Matthew.Dorothy SIDGEWICK, 64 is also in the household and described as Thomas' mother.Francis is described as Thomas' son - but Thomas would only have been 17 when Francis was born.Margaret SIDGEWICK (84) and her son William SIDGEWICK (42) are farming next door.Could William have been the father of Francis (who was known by his second name to avoid confusion)?
By 1901 Rebecca and William are enumerated as SEDGWICK farming at Morton Palms, with four children: Thomas 6, Francis 4, Ethel 2 and Harry 9 months. The SIDGWICK spelling has been used more recently.
Other members of the family remember Harry, Ethel, Violet and Frank as children of Rebecca and William. They later farmed at Dallowgill, Kirby Malzeard, N Yorks. I believe there are still Sidgwicks farming in the area.
Does anyone know anything more about this family?
Karen
