I had to chuckle when I read this message. I have many family lines that are in the Vinton/Athens and surrounding counties that all seem like they have something to hide. No one living Ever knew anything. In the case of my family, grandparents died young and took whatever information they had with them to their graves. Living relatives either really don't know or don't care enough to ask questions. I am the pesky one. Through research I have found that indeed one branch of the family, (TOWNE), did have something to hide. Two of my Grandmothers and several aunts/uncles were accused of witchcraft in Salem, MA, resulting in one grandmother and two aunts being hanged. No wonder no one was talking! Also, it is my understanding that the southern Ohio area has always been a good place to "hide out". You mentioned the last distaff name you have is bauer or some variation. Could this be BACUS? I am unsure what distaff means. Happy searching!
