This is the father of Richard Warren Sears-

!History of Sears, Roebuck & Co. James wrote (Civil War) "I would not expose myself one minute to save the whole govt. I have got enough of the govt; there is nothing but roguery and rascality from one end to the other, which you can see is the only thing that has protected this war."
He had gone to CA in 1849. Unsuccessful, sailed back around Cape Horn. Returned from the war with a bothersome leg wound and sore distraught in spirit
When Richard was six they moved to Spring Valley, MN where James was blacksmith and wagonmaker. According to Asher they lived for awhile in Rochester where James made some of Dr William Mayo's first surgical instruments.
