Naturalization papers

You didn't mention naturalization papers and I have been through the (next door) Clay county courthouse looking for some. My conclusion is that the US was a very easy place to hide (if that was your intent). "We" didn't ask a lot of questions. You can try the Yankton courthouse for naturalization papers but the ones I found at Vermillion had precious little hard data on them. All that the document said was that my g/g gave up England as his preferred country and accepted the US as his legal residence. Their wording was, of course, better than mine.

You are lucky though, in a way, in that Crotty is not a common name.
