I couldn't find the proper name of the facility in an old phone book. It is at the junctions of highways 50 and 81 at the north edge of town, I believe the street address is 1000 W 31st Street. There are signs on the highways that say "don't pick up hitchhikers". I used to live in Yankton but can't remember if there were no fences around the buildings or just chain link. There is an old small cemetery to the west of the grounds for patients, probably many graves without markers. I didn't ever try to get records right from the facility, but instead found my relative's death recorded at the courthouse. He was in his 80's when he died there in 1946, and it was referred to as the SD State Hospital. He was actually a prisoner serving a life term and when he became ill 2 months before death, he was moved to the hospital in order to receive "secure treatment".
