Good morning.

South Dakota carried out their own census', from 1885 to 1945. These "state" census' are on file in Pierre and are not viewable any way except in person. Perhaps someone at the Historical Society will do lookups and photocopy the data but I don't know any details. Try "South Dakota Historical Society" on google for the link.

There is an 8 foot tall atlas on the wall of the Union county courthouse. I believe the date is 1895, and this may show you where the family lived. Not sure who you would ask to look at it though. The Historical Society has other atlases and it would be a good idea to ask them about their holdings.

The BLM (Bureau of Land Management) has a site that allows you to search for homestead information. Type in "BLM" on google and it will immediately find the site (first choice). Look for the word "genealogy" at the bottom of the page. By clicking you will now be on page 2. Look for a dark green box near the top of the page that says "search land patents" or some such wording. Page 3 will ask for your zip code and you are off and running. Type in South Dakota and Krotzier. You may or may not get a hit on the name, depending on whether they homesteaded or not.

Richland is directly along the Big Sioux River, which isn't big, or wide, or deep. But, I guess it is bigger than the Little Sioux River...well...one would assume it is. There isn't much to Richland any more, maybe ten homes. There is no sign of a business district but it's likely there was one at one time.

There is a museum on main street Elk Point but I have never managed to stop when it is open. You might look for an Elk Point home page and look for the city library. It might be located in the school, something that other local towns are doing.

That's all I have for ideas. Hope this helps. bye, dj
