If Edward R. HILLIS was living in 1909, you should be able to get a death certificate from the Dept. of Health, 523 E. Capitol, Pierre, SD 57501-3182. Death records were supposed to be kept from mid-1905. The death certificate may show where he is buried, but, if not, the date of death should help you to find an obituary. There are obituaries and there is also a WPA Cemetery Project at the State Historical Library, 900 Governors Drive, Pierre, SD 57501. You need to have a pretty good idea of the location of the cemetery to find a person in the WPA records, though. I don't think they are alphabetized by person.
