Hello Virginia,
Has anyone contacted you about Robert Clyde yet? I did some checking, and unfortunately, the Sioux Falls (Minnehaha Co) Argus Leader newspaper did not start until the 1880's. The Valley Springs paper started later also. I found a short excerpt in the Valley Springs Centennial book stating that the hotel was the Central House where the murder occurred, which was the first for the town. It gave no names. I am going to check 2 more sources and visit the Pleasant View Cemetery in Valley Springs.
If someone has already found this info for you please let me know, as I am curious now!
