There is one entry on Rootsweb's WorldConnect site for Daniel J. Aalberg. It states Bessie was born 5 Feb 1891 in Iowa and her parents were Isaac Q. Ballard and Mary A. Rupe. You might check this out.

You may never figure out why Daniel changed the spelling of his surname - perhaps it got spelled that way on some document and he just continued it. Or he may have thought it was easier to pronounce - who knows!!
