They didn't need middle names, everyone knew who they were and where they were! But when you're facing starvation, death and disease middle names don't even enter the picture.

Adopting a middle name in the US could also have been an indication that his lot in life was improving from the wretched poverty he had escaped in Ireland. He couldn't have owned property in Ireland not then or for many decades after he left. And he may not even have survived had he stayed in Ireland.

It must have been a heady feeling for him to have had 160 acres which is what the landed gentry or aristocracy in Ireland would have had then or they would have had more. Ordinary people didn't have that. He would have left a hovel in Ireland aptly described in the following:
