Hi, Marilyn - Thomas J. Riley was born in County Cork, Ireland about 1843. He arrived with his mother, father and 9 siblings in Boston in 1849. The family settled in West Springfield, MA - most working in the paper & textile mills. Thomas is on the Mass. Federal Census for 1850 & the State census in 1855. I don't find him again until 1873, when a child is born to he and Bridget Buckley in West Springfield. I do know from his obit that they were married in Hoosic Falls, NY about 1870 - this town was right over the border from Mass. The had several more kids then "disappeared" - I finally found them about a year ago when I found Thomas' brother John's obit. John is my 2nd g-grandfather. The family were early homesteaders in McCook and according to the land records, Thomas had 160 acres in Bridgewater. If I am reading them right, he sold some of the land to his daughter Lizzie & he and Bridget moved to Watertown about 1913, where his son David and daughter Emma lived. He died there in 1918. By the way - Thomas' newphew Edward Lawton, born in Mass. about 1860 appears on the Dakota Terroritorial Census in 1885, in Lake, Aurora Co. He is married with an infant daughter. This family ended up in California! Thanks, again for all your help!
