Family stories have told us that my husband's grandfather, Joseph Lane BENDER, was adopted by Fred & Ella (LANE) BENDER. Joe thought his biological mother's name was Pearl ANDERSON. Joe was born 16 July 1903, in S.D., Indiana or Chicago, IL. I sent for a birth record from IL and it says that Joe was a legitamate child of Fred & Ella (it is a "delayed" birth record and was not filed until 1941). Some say Pearl's family was from Pierre, S.D., possibly homesteaded there. Does anyone have, or know where to find information on this adoption, if there was one?
