Amy --
Thank you. I am now convinced the William, who died in 1840 in Muscogee was a Scurlock, not a Spurlock.
I have these items about Scurlocks in Georgia.
In the 1785 Wilkes County tax list, Joshua Scurlock was listed and when he sold land on Upton's creek in 1788, Presley Scurlock was a witness.
Presly was a justice of the peace in Jackson County in 1801 and in Apeil 10 of that year, he sold land on the Appalachee grnted in 1785 to Micajah Williamson..Presley's wife Jane joined in the deed.
On 17 Jan 1803, Presley sp;d additional land on the Appalachee. He appearted in the 1805 Jackson lottery and he or anotherPresley was enumerated in Monroe County, Ala.in 1816.
William Scurlock, a Rev vet, was in 1827 Baldwin (the same one, no doubt).
Wilkes County Ga wills , 1790-1791-- JAS, SCURLOCK (maybe father of Joshua). Land warrants for Elbert County, 1785-1795 - Jas. SPURLOCK(maybe same Jas. Scurlock).
Those who susrained damage from Indians in Greene County, Jan. 1787-July 1788. -JOSH. SPURLOCK (sure this was Scurlock).
George Spurlock (was Scurlock) was a Rev soldier at the Battle of Kettle Creek. He was a major. Appeared twice more as Spurlock and I am quite sure he was not a Spurlock.
There were a couple Miles Spurlocks in Middle Tebnn. ca 1815-30and one was sometimes spelled "Mial" even onhis 1812 military papers. He was in Alabama in 1830.
I will dig out the newspaper reference to old Wlliam dyimg in 1840 Muscogee.
There were LOTS of Scurlocks in ca 1850 middle Tenn. and the most I ever saw were in 1820-30 Jackson County, Ohio from Franklin County, N.Car. , as I recall.
