I would also like to make a point about this post, but I hope that mine will be a bit less, how should I say, MEAN!

"That Mary might have been widow of another Scudder has not really been considered. Her three children by Joseph were born 1686 - 1693. If she was the Mary Scudder born 1648, she would have been 38 at birth of first child and 45 at birth of last, certainly not impossible, but unlikely"

Firstly, I would like to respectfully say that, it is not at all impossible for a woman to continue to have children into her 40's and onward. And, considering the era, the non-existance of birth control, the belief system of the puritans regarding procreation, and recorded history, it is rather LIKELY that she gave birth to her first child with Joseph at the age of 38. Taking into account that it has been recognized that she may have come to the marriage all ready a widow, it is quite LIKELY, that she also came with children from her previous marriage, or marriages, for as we know, women were often widowed 2 or more times before own death.
Recalling from my own records, it was a very common practice to marry again, shortly after the traditional mouring period was over. And, it was also quite common for families to consist of as much as 20 children, whether they be all from the same two parents or extended through remarriage. We also know that sometimes, the step-father of such children did not include children who were not biologically their own in their will, as they were usually all ready provided for in their own fathers wills, if in fact, that father had anything to leave. I have found this many times. Certainly, if it were possible to research this person more, it would be very interesting to discover the truth. I do not believe there are any conspiracies here, just mistake of fact and lack of verifiable records.
