The following is a possible ancestry of Ransom Scroggins and Benjamin Rice. Benjamin Rice Sr and Humphrey Scroggins Jr appear in Jackson County GA at the same time. Benjamin Rice Jr. marries Margaret, the daughter of Humphrey Scroggin, Jr. Humphrey Scroggins Sr leased land from William Rice in Henry County Virginia. I have followed the moves of Rices and Scroggin families and made the following connections:

Descendants of Richard Rice

1. RICHARD RICE

Child of RICHARD RICE is:
2.       i.       WILLIAM RICE, b. Abt. 1729, , , Ireland; d. 1796, , Henry, Virginia.

Generation No. 2

2. WILLIAM RICE (RICHARD) was born Abt. 1729 in , , Ireland, and died 1796 in , Henry, Virginia. He married MARY GOOCH.

More About WILLIAM RICE:
Taxes-1778: 1778, , Henry, Virginia

Children of WILLIAM RICE and MARY GOOCH are:
       i.       JOHN RICE, b. , , Virginia.
       ii.       JAMES RICE, b. , , Virginia.
3.       iii.       BENJAMIN RICE, b. , , Virginia; d. 01 Sep 1813, , Washington, Tennessee.
4.       iv.       SPENCER MORGAN RICE, SR., b. Abt. 1756, , , Virginia; d. Abt. 1807, New Market, Madison, Alabama.
       v.       WILLIAM RICE, b. Bet. 1755 - 1760, , , Virginia; d. Abt. Jun 1835, , Yancy, North Carolina.

Notes for WILLIAM RICE:
William Rice, b. abt 1755/60; d. abt Jun 1835, Yancey Co. (now Madison Co.), NC. He appears on the 1790 Burke Co., NC Census in 12th Company which became Buncombe County in 1792. His wife did not appear on the 1800 Buncombe Co., NC Census. His descendants have alleged Indian blood and this possibly came from his wife. William owned land adjoining Martin Maney in 1799 and Martin Maney's wife was Keziah Vann who was alleged to be part Cherokee, daughter of Indian interpreter John Vann. However, one account alleged she was by John Vann and a white woman Agnes Weatherford who later married a Burleson and left numerous children (whom I'm yet unable to identify). Agnes Burleson and a John Vann live in adjoining households per the 1790 Burke Co., NC Census, 10th Company, which area appears to be what is ow Mitchell Co., NC and near Gillespie's Gap. I believe William Rice's wife may have been a daughter of John Vann and/or Agnes Weatherford.

       vi.       JOSEPH RICE, b. Abt. 1761; d. Bet. 1850 - 1860, , Buncombe, North Carolina; m. MARGARET YOUNG.

Notes for JOSEPH RICE:
Joseph Rice, b. 1761; d. 1850/60 Buncombe Co., NC m. Margaret, daughter of James Young who was a brother in law to Captain Edmund Sams. Joseph was a Revolutionary War soldier from Henry Co., VA and lived on Bull Creek of Swannanoa River, Buncombe Co., NC which received its name Bull Creek because that is where Joseph killed the last known buffalo bull east of the Mississippi River. His son, Joseph Marion Rice, had a stock stand near Lapland (now Marshall, Madison Co., NC) on the Drovers Road between Greenville, SC and Greeneville, TN and in 1850 he was an innkeeper in the town of Newport, Cocke Co., TN.

       vii.       DAVID RICE.
       viii.       MARY RICE, b. Bet. 1765 - 1771; d. Aft. 1810; m. JONAS GOOCH.
ix.       CHARLES RICE, b. Bef. 1770.
