Sorry, Jill and Marge.
Despite reading through my messages before posting I missed out one of the most important details - yes Brighton and surrounding area, especially Hangleton, but also Preston, Patcham, Ditchling, Hamsey.
I have now found a memoir by an earlier researcher which takes these SCRASEs (SCRACE, SCRAS) back 4 generations before a Richard that was buried in 1625.
I am still trying to tie these records in with my research on the BLAKER family of Portslade. There are a number of cousin marriages that keep confusing me.
The SCRASE line I am researching seems to have largely daughtered out, and there was also a name change to SCRASE-DICKINS, a requirement of an inheritance.
I hope to put the memoir on the web in due course - I will post here when I do so.
