In Reply to: Circa 1860s photo of Eliza Jane Scott, wife of J. G. Scott by Paul Peterson of 18741

I was contacted by someone who suggested that the woman in the photo may be Eliza Jane Rawlings, born Apr 1831 in Scott Co., IN. After researching this name on ancestry.com, I agree with his tentative identification. On 11 Jan 1849, in Scott Co., IN, Eliza Jane Rawlings married a farmer, Joseph C. Scott, born about 1826 in Scott Co., IN. I have re-examined the writing on the back of the mount and now believe the woman's husband's middle initial "G" is actually a "C" that has been written over. The family is listed in the 1850 U.S. Census data for Jennings Township, Scott Co., IN; the 1856 Iowa State Census data for Monroe, Madison Co., IA; the 1860 U.S. Census data for Grand River, Madison Co., IA; the 1870 U.S. Census data for Lincoln Township, Union Co., IA; and the 1880 U.S. Census data for Independent Township, Barton Co., KS. Joseph and Eliza had six children:

Anna J. Scott, born about 1852 in IA

James A. Scott, born about 1854 in IA

Laura L. Scott, born about 1856 in IA

Addison V. Scott, born 14 Jan 1858 in Creston, Madison Co., IA, died 1929

Emeretta E. Scott, born Jul 1860 in IA

Warren Scott, born about 1868 in IA
