I had considered William Telfer married to an Elliot...but if you review the census it gets really weird! Margaret Elliott is called his niece in 1851, then in 1861 she is still living with Isabella Telfer and is called her daughter. Why would she not be William's grandaughter in 1851? I think Isabella had 3 kids, whether married or not...Isabel Martin, William Elliot and Margaret Elliot.
As for two wives for William, it could be, I don't have names for either one, but all the kids are born within 12 years 1799-1811, but I have a gap with no kids between 1802-1810, I could be missing some kids or a wife died and William remarried. I need some cemetery markers for this family.
Williams daughter Margaret Telfer 1802-1882 married William Armstrong 1791-1869 and they are my ancestors. And their daughter Mary Armstrong married John H. Turnbull. All really tough families to dig around in.
William Armstrongs sister, Elizabeth married Andrew Elliot 1787-1868 of Castleton, so there is some Elliot presence in the family. And...Andrew Elliot's mother was Janet Turnbull. I am getting a headache just putting this on paper.
I am hoping someone else is a descendant of this family, or families and can help me fill in some blanks. If all these families are related it would appear some inbreeding may have taken place!
