Greetings Helen, I am not researching the Swan or Huggan pedigrees, but did find information about both families which you may or may not have in your genealogical records. For instance, I located the Jedburgh, christening index for "Kathrine" Swan, daughter of Thomas Swan. Her date of baptism is given as 23 August 1793, which at least agrees with the month you have for her christening. And, like your records, her mother is not listed in the index, which was found at the Latter Day Saints (LDS) British Isles Vital Records Index (BIVRI) collection on CD ROM, shows the baptism took place in Jedburgh's Associate Congregation of Free Congregation, which I believe would refer to the church you had indicated in your message to the GenForum. Fortunately, the LDS have recorded the baptism registers for the Free Congregation on microfilm. Please see below for the christening index for "Kathrine" Swan, which also includes the LDS microfilm number: SWAN, Kathrine Christening Gender: Female Christening Date: 23 Aug 1792 Recorded in: Jedburgh, Roxburgh, Scotland Collection: Associate Session Congregation or Free C Father: Andrew SWAN Source: FHL Film 559522 = Baptisms, Jedburgh Associate Congregation (Scotland) Nonconformist) (Main Author) Dates: 1737 - 1799 ____ The christening record can be found on LDS microfilm number 559522 which you can order from your Family History Centre if you haven't already done so. The LDS have not filmed the marriages for the Free Congregation, which is indeed unfortunate as Catherine's parents may have been married in this church. The marriage record of her parents may have provided you with her mother's maiden name. I did search for a marriage record for Andrew Sawn at the BIVRI collection and also at the Latter Day Saints website at www.familysearch.org, but without success. But, I believe I located the christening indexes of at least two older sisters of Catherine's at the BIVRI. These are for the christenings of Margaret (1785) and Isobel, (1790). The indexes show their father was Andrew Swan. The full christening records can be found on the same Jedburgh Associate Congregation microfilm shown above, number 559522. The two christening records follow: SWAN, Margaret Christening Gender: Female Christening Date: 17 Apr 1785 Recorded in: Jedburgh, Roxburgh, Scotland Collection: Associate Session Congregation or Free C Father: Andrew SWAN Source: FHL Film 559522 = Jedburgh Associate Congregation (Scotland) Dates: 1737 - 1799 ____ SWAN, Isobel Christening Gender: Female Christening Date: 10 Oct 1790 Recorded in: Jedburgh, Roxburgh, Scotland Collection: Associate Session Congregation or Free C Father: Andrew SWAN Source: FHL Film 559522 = Jedburgh Associate Congregation (Scotland) Dates: 1737 - 1799 ____ After finding the christening records of Catherine and her sisters Margaret and Isobel, I then looked for the marriage of Catherine Swan and Thomas Huggan, but again was not successful with the search. But I did find the christening records of four of their children, Thomas, John, a daughter Christian Catherine, and another son named James. As you will see below the christening indexes for Thomas names his mother as Catherine Swan, while the christening records for John, Christian Catherine, and James show the mother's name was Christian and Christian Catherine Swan respectively. The christening records for these children are can also be found on LDS microfilm number 559522, for the Jedburgh Associate Congregation: HUGGAN, Thomas Christening Gender: Male Birth Date: 17 May 1826 Birthplace: Associate Congregation Or Free Church, Jedburgh, Roxburgh, S Recorded in: Jedburgh, Roxburgh, Scotland Collection: Associate Session Congregation or Free C Father: Thomas HUGGAN Mother: Catharine SWAN Source: FHL Film 559522 = Jedburgh Associate Congregation (Scotland) Nonconformist) (Main Author) Dates: 1808 - 1856 ____ HUGGAN, John Christening Gender: Male Birth Date: 4 Sep 1828 Christening Date: 2 Nov 1828 Recorded in: Jedburgh, Roxburgh, Scotland Collection: Associate Session Congregation or Free C Father: Thomas HUGGAN Mother: Christian SWAN Source: FHL Film 559522 = Jedburgh Associate Congregation (Scotland) Dates: 1808 - 1856 ____ HUGGAN, Christian Catharine Christening Gender: Female Birth Date: 4 Dec 1830 Christening Date: 6 Feb 1831 Recorded in: Jedburgh, Roxburgh, Scotland Collection: Associate Session Congregation or Free C Father: Thomas HUGGAN Mother: Christian Catharine SWAN Source: FHL Film 559522 = Jedburgh Associate Congregation (Scotland) Dates: 1808 - 1856 ____ HUGGAN, James Christening Gender: Male Birth Date: 22 Jan 1833 Christening Date: 10 Mar 1833 Recorded in: Jedburgh, Roxburgh, Scotland Collection: Associate Session Congregation or Free C Father: Thomas HUGGAN Mother: Christian Catharine SWAN Source: FHL Film 559522 = Jedburgh Associate Congregation (Scotland) Dates: 1808 - 1856 ____ Next I looked for the christening index of the Thomas Huggan who married Catherine Swan. I may have found not only a record of his christening but also for his birth date on the BIVRI index, but I can't be one-hundred percent positive this Thomas Huggan is the Thomas in your pedigree. The index shows that Thomas's parents were William Huggan and Betty Turnbull: HUGGAN, Thomas Christening Gender: Male Birth Date: 24 Mar 1785 Christening Date: 5 Apr 1785 Recorded in: Jedburgh, Roxburgh, Scotland Father: William HUGGAN Mother: Betty TURNBULL Source: FHL Film 1067944 = Parish registers, Parish Church of Jedburgh, Baptisms, 1737-1782, 1758-1788 (Indexed), 1788-1821. Dates: 1737 - 1821 ____ The 1785 index record for Thomas shows he was christened in the Jedburgh Church of Scotland, which would have been an Anglican Church. This Thomas would have been at the right age to have married Catherine Swan. If you believe this Thomas is your ancestor, you can find his christening record on LDS microfilm number 1067944. Later christening records for the Jedburgh Church of Scotland can be found on the following microfilm, if you would like to search for christenings and marriages after the year 1821: Baptisms, 1820-1857 (Indexed) Marriages, 1821-1854 Burials, 1822-1855 Neglected Birth Entries, 1838-1851 FHL BRITISH Film 1067945 Item 1 ____ I also located the birth and christening indexes on the BIVRI CD collection for six other children of William Huggan and Betty Turnbull. The full christening records for these children can also be found on LDS microfilm number 1067944 for the Jedburgh Church of Scotland: HUGGAN, George Christening Gender: Male Birth Date: 19 Feb 1767 Christening Date: 22 Feb 1767 Recorded in: Jedburgh, Roxburgh, Scotland Father: William HUGGAN Mother: Bettie TURNBUL Source: FHL Film 1067944 = Parish registers, Parish Church of Jedburgh, Baptisms, 1737-1782, 1758-1788 (Indexed), 1788-1821. Dates: 1737 - 1821 ____ Carrying the Huggan and Turnbull pedigrees further, I found two marriage indexes for William "Huggon"/Huggan and Betty Turnbull at the LDS International Genealogical Index (IGI) at www.familysearch.org The two indexes note two different sources for the marriage, one source being the Ancrum, Roxburgh Church of Scotland and the other the Crailing, Roxburgh Church of Scotland registers. I cannot account for the the two church sources except to comment that it may be that the marriage between William Huggan and Betty Turnbull was recorded in the registers of both Anglican congregations. Further, the two indexes disagree on the exact date of marriage. For instance, the first index you see below referencing the Ancrum Church of Scotland notes the marriage occurred on 15 December 1764, while the index for the marriage referencing the Crailing church shows William and Betty were married 16 December 1764. These indexes follow: WILLIAM HUGGON Male Event(s): Birth: Christening: Death: Burial: Marriages: Spouse: BETTY TURNBULL Marriage: 15 DEC 1764 Ancrum, Roxburgh, Scotland Messages: Extracted marriage record for locality listed in the record. Parish Church of Crailing. ____ As with the other LDS films cited earlier, microfilm numbers 1067930 and 1067933 can be ordered from the Family History Centre. Getting back to the family of Thomas and Catherine Swan Huggan: I found an 1881 census enumeration for a Thomas Huggan who may have been their son. The census shows that Thomas, his wife Elizabeth, and their children were living at 11 Loan Street, Hawick, Roxburgh. The census was found at the LDS website which is free to search. Because I don't have enough information about Thomas and Catherine's children, I can't be certain the Thomas Huggan in the 1881 censu is their son. But he may be, based on his age in the census, which is recorded as 54, and which places his year of birth in 1827. The 1881 census was compiled for the night of 3 April 1881. Thomas's christening record shows he was born on 17 May 1826. This means he would have turned 55 in 1881, which would then place his year of birth in 1826. Aside from the children in the census, Thomas's and Catherine's grandson. 4 year old Thomas was also in the household on the night of 3 April 1881. He may have been just visiting and may have actually lived with the family. The census does not show if the younger Thomas was a permanent resident of the home. The census follows: Dwelling: 11 Loan St Census Place: Hawick, Roxburgh, Scotland Source: FHL Film 0224040 GRO Ref Volume 789 EnumDist 15 Page 5 Name, Relation, Marital Status, Age, Sex, Occupation, Birthplace Thomas HUGGAN, Head, Married, 54, Male, Grocer, Jedburgh, Roxburgh, Scotland Elizabeth HUGGAN, Wife, Married 57, Female, Hawick, Roxburgh, Scotland Robert HUGGAN, Son, Unmarried, 19, Male, Hairdresser & Barber, Hawick, Roxburgh, Scotland William HUGGAN, Son, Unmaried, 16, Male, Hairdresser & Barber, Hawick, Roxburgh, Scotland Janet HUGGAN, Daughter, Unmarried, 14, Female, F, Weaver Woollen, Hawick, Roxburgh, Scotland Margaret HUGGAN, Daughter, Unmarried, 12, Female, Scholar, Hawick, Roxburgh, Scotland Thomas HUGGAN, Grandson, Unmarried, 4, Male, Scholar, Hawick, Roxburgh, Scotland ____ I searched for the birth record index of Thomas and Elizabeth's grandson Thomas Huggan noted in the 1881 census above to see if I could learn who his parents were, but did not find the record. After locating the 1881 census for the family of Thomas and Catherine Huggan, I next searched for the christening and birth records for their children. I beleive I found the birth indexes for the children, but some of the children in the indexs are not listed in the 1881 census, as they may have either moved out of the home and started their own families, may have worked out of the household, or may have been deceased by 1881. The indexes show that Elizabeth's maiden name was Stevenson. The birth indexes were also found at the LDS website. The oldest child found in the records is Janet. Civil Registration of births, marriages, and deaths in Scotland commenced in the year 1855, the year that Janet was born. And all of the indexes are referenced on a microfiche number 1067936. This microfiche does not contain the actual civil birth records of the children, but is actually an index which will tell you on which microfilms each birth record will be found. This potentially means you would have to order one microfilm for the birth of each child from the Family History Centre. This would total seven films for the birth records, not to mention the microfilms you would have to order to view the christening records noted earlier. I live in the States and pay $5.50 for each microfilm. If you live in the UK, this equals about 2.80 British Pounds Stg per film, or about 20 Pounds for all seven films. There is an easier, quicker, and less expensive way of obtaining birth, marriage, and death records, as well as christening and census records for Scotland. This is to purchase the records from the ScotlandsPeople website. At ScotlandsPeople, you can purchase credits in units of 30. 30 credits cost 6 Pounds. You have 90 days to use up the credits. Locating a birth or christening index for an ancestor, will cost one credit, while downloading a copy of the actual record costs 5 credits, for a total of 6 credits altogether for the record. This means you can download 5 christening records or five birth records, or a combination of both up to five records for the 6 Pounds. The ScotlandsPeople website will explain the procedure and costs for ordering records perhaps a lot more clearly than I can. The website for ScotlandsPeople can be found at: http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ I have located several records at the ScotlandsPeople website and believe this site is one of the best for locating information about ancestors born in Scotland. By the way, I almost forgot to mention that I also located the marriage index for Thomas Huggan and Elizabeth Stevenson at the LDS website. The index shows they were married in Hawick on 26 June 1846. The marriage was recorded in the Hawick Church of Scotland. Please see the index below: THOMAS HUGGAN Male Event(s): Birth: Christening: Death: Burial: Marriages: Spouse: ELIZABETH STEVENSON Marriage: 26 JUN 1846 Hawick, Roxburgh, Scotland Messages: Extracted marriage record for locality listed in the record. Parish Church of Hawick ____ I also found an 1881 census return that may pertain to Thomas Huggan's brother James. The census shows that James was 48 in 1881 and was married to an Isabella. The census also shows that James and Isabella had three children and that Isbaella's father, 77 year old John Hewison was also living in the household, located at 13 Wellington Street, Wilton, Roxburgh. James's birthplace in the census is given as Jedburgh, Roxburgh, which is the same place his chrsitening/birth record shows he was born in the year 1833. At age 48 in 1881 James's year of birth would be 1833. The census is next: Dwelling: 13 Wellington St Census Place: Wilton, Roxburgh, Scotland Source: FHL Film 0224044 GRO Ref Volume 810 EnumDist 7 Page 9 Name, Relation, Marital Status, Age, Sex, Occupation, Birthplace James HUGGAN, Head, MARRIED, 48, MALE, Woollen Frame Worker Knitter, Jedburgh, Roxburgh, Scotland Isabella HUGGAN, WIFE, 49, FEMALE, Hawick, Roxburgh, Scotland Jane HUGGAN, DAUGHTER, UNMARRIED, 25, FEMALE, Seamstress, Hawick, Roxburgh, Scotland Christie HUGGAN, DAUGHTER, 19, FEMALE, Woollen Power Loom Weaver, Hawick, Roxburgh, Scotland John HUGGAN, SON, 10, MALE, Scholar, Hawick, Roxburgh, Scotland John HEWISON, Father In Law, WIDOWER, 77, MALE, Woollen Frame Work Knitter, Hawick, Roxburgh, Scotland ____ Knowing that Isabella's maiden name was Hewison, I searched for the marriage of Thomas Huggan and Isabella at the LDS website, and located the following index: JAMES HUGGAN Male Event(s): Birth: Christening: Death: Burial: Marriages: Spouse: ISABELLA HOWISON Marriage: 03 JUL 1854 Hawick, Roxburgh, Scotland Messages: Extracted marriage record for locality listed in the record. I next found the civil birth records for the children of James Huggan and Isobella Hewison/Howison/Houison. You will notice that several of the indexes show children who were not recorded in the 1881 census living in the household of James and Isabella. This means these children had either moved out of the home by 1881, or were deceased. Isabella is shown to have lived at 2 Loan Street, which would have been in close proximity to Thomas and Elizabeth at 11 Loan Street in Hawick. The page that downloads can be navigated up and down as well as side by side. I had to navigate down and then click on the magnifying glass just below the map to obtain an enlarged view of Hawick. You can also access the 1863 map for Jedburgh. Keep in mind that I can't say for certain that the christening, birth, and marriage records I found all pertain to your Swan and Huggan ancestors. I'd recommend that you also search for your ancestors at the LDS free website, where I found many of the indexes as well as the 1881 census returns. I hope some of this information helps with your research. Best of Luck Helen. Dave Boylan Notify Administrator about this message?
