irregular marriage 1787 Hay-Taylor

What were "irregular" marriages in 1787? My ancestors, Jane Ann Taylor of Jedburgh and William Hay of Makerston, went to Covenhill (spelling? - what is this?) where they were irregularly married. [The other two couples on the same Extract page were also irregularly married, but in Edinburgh.] William and Jane later (1811) emigrated to America with their children and their parents. Any help on this topic, or on ancestry for William and Jane would be most welcome. -Donna Hay, California, USA
