I have got back to John Riddell (b. abt. 1800 probably in Hawick) who married an Elizabeth Middlemist (d. of Robert and Grace Leach) on 20th June 1823 in Eckford. But I'm a bit stuck on John' parents.

The family naming conventions remained until the early 20th century John and Elizabeth Middlemist moved to Houston and Killellan and produced: (in this order, I have all their D.O.B.s)

John (my g-g grandfather b. 1831 [though born in Renfrewshire he puts his FROM PLACE on the 1881 census as Hawick])
William Fordice (can't find a single Fordice link except to Banff, a William Riddle born in Fordyce)

My great grandfather was a William Kerr Riddell (b. 1873 in Greenock) which led me to suspect that somewhere down the line a Kerr would pop up (nothing on the various maternal lines). The closest I can get is a William Riddle m. Elizabeth Carre who had a number of well researched sons, and a less well researched John (b. 1779). But I also found a James Riddell who married a Helen Tinlin who had a John in 1771. Unfortunately both sets of their children tie in closely to the naming conventions. Further back a William Riddell was born to Walter and Margaret Ker in 1718, too far back I think.

By a process of elimination I have narrowed down the possible parents of John Riddell who married Elizabeth Middlemist to:

John Riddell married Peggy Parris produced a John in Hawick 1797 (but the rest of the childrens' names don't fit)

John Riddell married Agnes Whellans who produced a John in 1801 in Cavers (the rest of the childrens' names are quite close)

I'd love to assume that John and Elizabeth were super orderly and named their first two after the grandparents, the next two after themselves and the final two after the g-grandparents (this would tie in quite closely with how my g-g grandfather John [John and Elizabeth's son] and his wife Mary Drennan named their children)

Agnes (her maternal grandmother's name and possible paternal g-grandmothers name)
Elizabeth Middlemas (her paternal grandmothers' name and possible g-g grandmother)
Margaret (possible Peggy g-grandmother)
John (g-grandfather, grandfather and father)
Mary (Mothers name)
Helen (possible Helen Tinlin g-g-grandmother)
James (possible g-g-grandfather)
William Kerr (possible g-g grandfather and g-g grandmothers [Carre] ms.)

I know these are very common names but the possible links seem too close to ignore.
