This is not a surname known in Scotland. There have been no McClead births at all here since statutory registration began in 1855.

If it exists elsewhere (which I assume it does), then the likelihood is that the surname got corrupted at or after emigration. The most likely explanation is that it is a corruption of the surname (McLeod), pronounced 'McCloud'.
