Evening David

I have checked in the uK 1871 Census available on Find My Past - this is the only family that approximates to your information-

The Head of Household, James, is a "Fishermen"; and the two girls, Agnes and Mary are annotated "Twins".

The Municipal Borough of Berwick is on the the north/Scottish side of the Tweed; but that town after changing hands about 14 times in earlier centuries, is now recognised as part of England.

=============================

I note that her mother's name is clearly recorded as "Mary" on the 1886 Marriage Record, on the LDS Family Search site-

www.familysearch.org

==============================

If you have not already done so, I suggest you take a look at the Scanned IMAGE of the USA 1900 Census, on the LDS Family Search site.

There is clearly an error in the Original Document, as the Scanned IMAGE has Mary arriving in the USA in 1846, some 16 years BEFORE she was born in 1862, England!

==============================

Back on FMP, there are two possible Births-

VIEW
BORTHWICK       Mary Ann       England       Northumberland, Berwick       1863

The 1863 seems the more likely-

IGNORE THIS LINE-
Mother's maiden name:       Not available before 1911 Q3

It refers to the Search INDEX only, the Birth Record will have the mother's name.

You can order a copy from the GRO Southport, Lancashire England; and it will cost about US$15. There is a link on FMP.

You do NOT need the actual Date of Birth, as the extract above has everything needed.

Now located the family in the 1861 UK Census-

So it looks as though the 1861 Birth may be more relevant!

The location suggests that the Borthwick family may have been SALMON Fishermen.

1841 Census

Almost certainly the Borthwick Family, particularly by the Address-

I have added "Fisherman", as it appears on the Scanned IMAGE of the Original Document.

============================

Assuming this is the correct BORTHWICK Family, it seems as though James and Mary married about 1851, so Mary may be Scottish and the Marriage may have taken place in Scotland- which complicates searching!

There is one JB to Mary Marriage in 1852, East Lothian (aka Haddingtonshire) listed on Scotland's People, in the OLD PARISH REGISTERS Section.

www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

This is a Subscription site. About US$12 will purchase 30 Credits; and you could VIEW a Scanned IMAGE of the Original Record by using 6 of the Credits, one to access the Index and 5 for the IMAGE itself, which is down-loadable.

This should give you the Mother's Last Name.

==============================

If you follow through on later UK Censuses, you may be able to get some idea when her parents died or migrated.

You should also check on the USA Migration site-

www.castlegarden.org
covering 1842 to early 1900s.

Probably not of use to you; but worth being aware of-
