In www.Familysearch.org there is the record of a marriage bet. Robert Stewart and Helen Cock on 18 December 1851 in Dundee, Angus. This seems to rule out illegitimacy. In the 1861 Census for Lochee for Ellen Stewart is there any mention whether she was a widow, also her death record? Also, are ages given for her in any of the records you have looked at?She seems to have been about 38 in the 1861 Census. There is the death of a Robert Stewart in Lochee, Angus in 1859 who seems to be only 21, as it is possible he had died before the 1861 Census (although the age appears a little young if it is he!).The devil may still lie in the details that you have, as it were.
