Hi Allan , best thing for you to do is find his arrival in Victoria , had a look for you and it looks like he arrived December 1858 on the vessel "Shooting Star" , aged 24 , which puts his birth at 1834.
If you are in Melbourne , I understand you have to go to the State Library to view the details. Best you confirm that is correct. NSW has the details online , but not Victoria. As he was an Assisted Immigrant, the ships records will give where he was from and normally his parents ....even if he could read or write.
Could not find Margaret....was she born in Victoria ??
Ancestry . Com also has records , but it costs money.
NSW BDM search is also free against Victoria where you have to pay (not heaps), Victorians should talk to their members.
