Evening Gary
The easy way to start a family tree is to start with your friend.
She should obtain full copies of her Birth and any other similar record for herself from the appropriate NZ Registration authority.
Then work back through the earlier generations, ie her parents, father particularly etc.
Subject to it being relevant, she should obtain all three primary records of Birth, Marriage and Death.
This will help establish the basic lines; and may also trigger memories with her living relatives etc.
There are several sources on line, the most important Scottish one being Scotland's People as given by Maggie, run on behalf of the Registrar General of Scotland.
As well as BMDs, it has all of the Scottish CEnsuses from 1841 to 1911 available on-line.
The majority of those Scottish BMDs can be VIEWED as Scanned IMAGEs on-line, relatively cheaply, so not only do you get the names of the leading persons involved, you can also see the Witnesses at Marriages; and Informants for Births and Deaths - the latter including Cause of Death.
Because Migration is involved, Find My Past covers that for the UK in its Travel & Migration section, although I know from experience, it is far from complete.
Arrivals Lists for Australia and New Zealand are available on-line; but I don't recollect immediately their URLs/ Addresses.
==================================
FMP also has partial access to the Scottish Censuses; and the following list is all of the McGHees in the 1901 Census, living in Angus (aka Forfarshire)-
Household MCGHEE, Agnes 1851 50 F Lochee Forfarshire (Angus) VIEWN/A
Household MCGHEE, Catherine 1871 30 F St Andrew Forfarshire (Angus) VIEWN/A
Household MCGHEE, Elizabeth 1854 47 F St Peters Forfarshire (Angus) VIEWN/A
Household MCGHEE, George 1881 20 M St Mary Forfarshire (Angus) VIEWN/A
Household MCGHEE, Mary 1824 77 F St Peters Forfarshire (Angus) VIEWN/A
Household MCGHEE, Mary Ann 1862 39 F St Peters Forfarshire (Angus) VIEWN/A
Household MCGHEE, Mary G 1848 53 F St Mary Forfarshire (Angus) VIEWN/A
Household MCGHEE, Mary Jane 1884 17 F St Mary Forfarshire (Angus) VIEWN/A
Household MCGHEE, William 1871 30 M St Andrew Forfarshire (Angus) VIEWN/A
The Household Heads are almost all from Ireland.
Those results are from a strict search for mcgHee.
None are apparently in Brechin itself.
If a less strict search is carried out, allowing for mcgee, mcgHIe etc, several more results appear.

However as I indicated before, you must start with your friend, making sure that she is who she thinks she is !!
There are several persons on this forum who will help you if you run up against the proverbial "brick wall".
