Morning Gordon
You should go to Scotland's People, where his Death is recorded in the first year of Statutory Registration-
www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
The Death Record should be available to VIEW and Download as a Scanned IMAGE.
Scottish SR (1855 and later) Records normally contain the names of the parents; and if his wife was still alive, she is likely to be the Informant or mentioned elsewhere on the record if she pre-deceased him.
No guarantees, of course - but if you don't check, you may be missing an easy way of obtaining that information.
It will cost about UKĀ£7 to purchase 30 Credits (about US$7); of which as you will very readily find the link to the Scanned IMAGE, in total it will "cost" 6 Credits, leaving 24 to pursue the leads that this one will provide - and access is "instantaneous".

There are two possible Births in Currie on the LDS Family Search site, of which the later fits quite weel, subject to what you find on the Death Record

63. JOHN LAWRIE - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 18 JUN 1773 Currie, , Midlothian, Scotland
98. JOHN LAURIE - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 02 MAY 1778 Currie By Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland
Of course, he may not have been born/baptised in Currie; and the latter record may not even be in the Old Parish Registers. in the period 1851 to 1854, only about 40% of Baptisms appear in the OPRs, which preceded and effectively were replaced by the SRs.

You may find the 1841 and 1851 Censuses on SCp of use as well, particularly the 1851 as it generally has Occupations.
