I note that Susannah Hovey appears on the LDS Family Search site, with a husband who in one record is given as JOHN McLeod; but most of the others have RODERICK McLeod.
Also one gives John's Death as 1821, whilst AP's Marriage to Susannah Hovey McLeod is 1823.
Susannah seems to have died early, as Abel is shown as having two later wives.

Whilst all of the above are LDS FS SUBMISSIONS, the general content and pattern suggest that it has been well done, so likely to be reliable.
I suggest you try contacting the Submitter.

There are some John Mcleods serving with the 42nd around that period; but none have Canada etc mentioned.
There is one Roderick McLeod; but he was in a different Regiments, again with no mention of Canada.

If you are wanting to link back in to the Scottish Records and to have any chance of doing so, you will have to sort out the name discrepancy.

If possible, view or obtain a photo-copy of the Land Grant.
It may also give a information on his army service, again this may help identify him individually, although only one of the John McLeods has any detail - his Discharge Cerificate in Edinburgh about 1816, so unlikely to be the person you are looking for.
Check Archives Canada and the New Brunswick archives.
