I have checked in the Old Parish Registers, Baptisms and Births, available on Scotland's People wh ich is run on behalf of the Registrar General of Scotland-
www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
1745 to 1755 inclusive
Bain
Alex [Names begin with]
21 [Exact Surname only]
25 [Surnames that begin with]
Als the OPRs are far from complete because of the ravages of time, tide, flood, fire, war; and many parishes did not even maintain them.
So I guestimate that roughly only about 25% of the population is likely to be available to be transcribed into modern systems.

Hence the need to extract as much information as possible over in North America generally and Nova Scotia particularly.
Given his likely age at the shipwreck, he probably was not really aware of such aspects as the names of his parents unless others on the voyage or ship's papers provided those.
He was also unlikely to be aware of family naming patterns.
With the passage of time, even DNA profiling of yourself to compare with different areas of Scotland is unlikely to provide a solid location over here.

Regarding the 1773 Yarmouth Census, I wonder if the question asked was confusing where did you come from?" - was it that the family had travelled to the east coast such as New York, New Jersey etc, as probably this was easier and open for a longer period eavh year; then a quick coastal voyage to Nova Scotia.
Any clues from the season that the shipwrieck occurred in?

THe 1754 AB Baptism or Birth is 18th April 1754.
You should be able to VIEW te Scanned IMAGE of the Original Document on SP.
It also has Sophia's - be wary, SP is pernickety on spelling.
Also apparently Sophia's Death - these were very rarely recorded in the OPRs, so may be worth VIEWing.
But acknowledging there is no proof of it being the NS family.
Any Wills or Land Grants for Bain or McKinnon?
===========================
Soulsby and variants seems to be associated with Northumberland, Durham, Yorkshire, lincolnshire mainly, south of the Border, in the much later 1881 Census.

Methinks you still have quite a task, Good Luck!
Alex
