Hi Alex,
I am quite sure about the parents of Andrew McCrae, as his wife was still alive to help complete the death certificate and she would have known her in-laws. Also, there is a whole family from Leswalt with parents Andrew McCrae and Elizabeth McCredie. The trouble I've been having is trying to prove when he was born, 1806 or 1812?
The bigger problem I have is the parents of Andrew junior's wife Margaret McFadyen. Apart from being spelt differently every time, I am quite sure that the children were not sure about their grandmother's maiden name. It would have been quite easy to mix up gran's maiden name with the other gran so I think that is what happened.
On Margaret McCrae nee McFadyen's death certificate in 1868 her parents are listed as William McFadyen and Margaret McCredie. I believe the children made a mistake because they weren't sure. Perhaps it was McCubbin which makes more sense and is about the right time. Although I can't find Margaret's birth record in Maybole, I can find a marriage in Maybole in 1810 for McFadyen and McCubbin.
If I can find some connection through other children in census or other means then I will happily accept this.
Thanks for your input.
Regards,
Tim.
