Hi Tim,
This looks quite likely to be the family in 1871 Scotland as they are the only family I found with James and Janet with daughter Margaret of right age.
1871 GLASGOW CALTON, CALTON, LANARKSHIRE
6 MARKET STREET
WILLIAMSON
James, age 21, mason, born Kemmsey, Fifeshire
Janet, age 20, wife, born Balloch, Dumbartonshire
Margaret, age 1, daughter, born Glasgow, Lanark
****************************
I cannot see the actual images of the census, only the transcriptions as shown on ancestry.comso it may be that spelling of Kemmsey is wrong.
When I looked for James in 1861 there is one , right age, born Kennoway, Fifeshire so that may be him. To be sure you could go to scotlandspeople.gov.uk
and look up the marriage which should have both James and Janet's parent'snames shown.
The James in 1861 who was born Kennoway has parents George and Ann. This would seem to link with the names of his first son who in Scotland was often named after the father's father.
1861 has a Janet Mccrae of right age, born Glasgow, Dumbartonshire - parents Andrew and Margaret - so this also matches with name of first daughter for Janet and James
First daughter - Margaret and in Scotland often named after mother's mother.
I can trace these families back to 1841 census for you, but you really should first make sure they are the right people by finding the marriage record.
If you have not used scotlandspeople site before it is quite simple, but it is a pay as you go site. You would need to buy the minimum 30 credits which now costs about 7 British pounds. You can read about how it works at:
http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/Content/Help/index.aspx?r=554&409http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/Content/Help/index.aspx?r=554&409
You should be able to find James and Janet's marriage fairly easily I would think as you know they were married about 1869 and looks like it would have been in Glasgow. Knowing Janet's maiden name will help to narrow down the search as well.
You will likely have enough credits to look up births of the children born in Scotland too.
If you confirm the parents names, I can do the search of census records for you.
