Morning Patricia
I have been taking a look at the appropriate Censuses availabvle on FMP, for the USA 1880, Canada 1881 and Britain (actually only England & Wales), to see if I could pin down any of your Brierton ancestord born before those respective Censuses - BUT unfortunately none come to light.
Later USA Censuses are available locally in the USA and I suggest that you try a similar exercise with them.

Regarding Midlothian, Edinburgh etc, there can be considerable confusion.
This can also be compounded by individuals historically and today saying they were "born in Edinburgh" when all too frequently, they may be implying "near Edinburgh" etc.
Glasgow is even more difficult to sort out.
Hence the need to have some historic geographic knowledge of the areas involved.
It occurs in virtually all countries.
Note that even the LDS FS IGI can not get the 1881 "British" Census clarified as being really England & Wales only.
As you get further in to this genealogy game, other, similar aberrations etc come to light!
