Hi Stephan,
I'm not sure what you may have as far as census so here is what I found.
1851PAISLEY LOW CHURH, RENFREWSHIRE
12 BRIDGE STREET
GORDON
William, age 43, drayman, born Kell, Kircudbrightshire
Jane, age 37, wife, born Galston, Ayrshire
Alexander, age 14, son, bottler, born Riccarton, Ayrshire
Margret, age 12, daughter, born Riccarton, Ayrshire
Hugh, age 9, son, scholar, born Riccarton, Ayrshire
Jane, age 7, daughter, scholar, born Riccarton, Ayrshire
William, age 5, son, born Paisley, Renfrewshire
John, age 3, son, born Paisley, Renfrewshire
James, age 8months, son, born Paisley, Renfrewshire
So with this I went to 1841
1841 HURLFORD, RICCARTON, AYRSHIRE
GORDON
William, age 30, Ag. lab. born Scotland
Jane, age 25, born Ayrshire
Alexander, age 4, born Ayrshire
Margaret, age 2, born Ayrshire
WASSON
James, age 30, Ag. lab. born Ayrshire
John, age 25, Ag. lab. born Ayrshire
Its too bad 1841 does not show relationships - I wonder if James and John are brothers of Jane - just a thought.
As eldest child Alexander was born about 1837 it is likelyWilliam and Jane married about 1835/1836 and likely in Ayrshire as that is where she is from and where they are living when first child born.
I have found the best site for Scottish records - births, marriages and deaths to be scotlandspeople.gov.uk
You buy credits which you then use for searching and seeing images of the records.
BUT you can also sometimes find info at familysearch.org so I looked there
Here is birth of son James and it gives Jane's maiden name as Cameron
Scotland Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950
name: James Gordon
gender: Male
baptism/christening date: 18 Aug 1850
baptism/christening place: LOW CHURCH, PAISLEY, RENFREW, SCOTLAND
birth date: 13 Jul 1850
birthplace:
death date:
name note:
race:
father's name: William Gordon
father's birthplace:
father's age:
mother's name: Jane Cameron
mother's birthplace:
mother's age:
indexing project (batch) number: C11962-4
system origin: Scotland-VR
source film number: 1041322
reference number: - 2:17LLNR2
From year of birth and parents names I think is likely the right boy. I didn't find births of any of the other children so you would need to go to scotlandspeople for that info.
I tried scotlandspeople and there is 1 entry for a William Gordon married between 1833 and 1837 Ayrshire to a woman named Jane but without credits I could not see the entry, nor her maiden name but at least you know there is a record there.
This looks like the family in 1861
1861 PAISLEY LOW CHURCH, RENFREWSHIRE
16 GORDON'S LANE
GORDON
William, age 53, Ag. lab. born Helso, Roxburghshire
Margaret, age 22, daughter, shawl fringer, born Riccarton, Ayrshire
Jane, age 17, daughter, thread mill cope winder, born Riccarton, Ayrshire
William, age 14, son, rag mill carder mortten, born Paisley
John, age 11, son, scholar, born Paisley
I suppose Alexander and Hugh could be married or on their own but where is James, unless he died. I assume Jane died. You could find their deaths at scotlandspeople
