Carolyn
Many thanks for your work on my behalf. I do have a baptism certificate for Jemima Margaret Muir WHitelaw born 27 Feb 1953 and baptised 9 May 1954 in the Bathurst district of NSW which is near Sofala where the gold mining took place. I have been onto Scotland's People and found a marriage record between Janet Smith/Law and George Whitelaw on 22 February 1841 so as they departed UK to come here in August that means none of their children were
born in UK.Janet's death certificate states that they had 6 children living at that time(19 March 1867) - 4 girls and 2 boys.
Regarding Charles Perry - I have his marriage registration transcription dated 24 may 1880; he was a widower and had come here apparently with his wife Jane and 1 child Emma? it seems that they had another child named Fanny in 1877 and Jane died in 1879.HE remarried to Jemima Whitelaw in 1880 in Sydney their ages given as 34 and 28.His father was John Perry born 1812 in Somerset, UK and his mother was Fanny WHite born 1815 Someset.I have been able to find records partly due to their being included on the LDS Pedigree Files. I also found some census records of his family. I have Charles DOB as 1845 in Wells UK. However i have not been able to find his first marriage record to Jane Partis or record of his 1st child's birth but it is supposed to be around 1868.ALso i do not know his date of departure from UK or arrival in Sydney, but would guess it was sometime between 1868 and 1876.
Charles and JEMima had 6 more children 5 boys and 1 girl being Jemima and she was the youngest, born in Balmain in 1889. SHe died in 1905 and Charles hadalready died in 1895 in Balmain and as his occupation was given as an Asphalter I guess his lungs were one reason for his death, although it says he had acute rheumatism and cardiac failure. He was only 50 yrs.
You are right about Jemima Jane - she actually was in an orphanage I believe after her mother died and then was taken up to MUrwillumbah by 1 or 2 of her brothers - it is up north NSW, about on the border of Queensland and NSW. SHe worked as a servant and married John Hart Dean who with some brothers and sisters and his parents had come up from Wollongong where their grandparents had settled - it is about an hour's drive south of Sydney.
Jemima & John were married in May 1914 and my mother was born in OCtober 1914! She was sent down to Sydney and brought up by the Currie Family in Balmain. I was in my 20's before i was told this by Mum. My Dad found who her parents were because he was employed in a legal office and was able to gain access to records. SHe was not officially adopted until 1928 - the adoption act did not come in until then. I made contact quite remarkably 20 yrs ago with her family in Murwillumbah - she had 3 sisters and 1 brother who died recently. Two of her sisters have died and there is only one left. We discovered that one of her Uncles who stayed in Balmain (did not go to Murwillumbah) was a great friend of one of her adoptive mother's brothers, and we believe that is how she ended up in that family. She was born in a very small dairy farming community and the family were very strict Presbyterians and i guess would not have looked good having a baby conceived out of 'wedlock'. Mum was actually born in Bangalow (just south of Murwillumbh) and her mother was staying with her brother on his farm there.Apparently she was also small and sickly and her adoptive mother had recently lost her first baby. SHe went on to have 2girls and 1boy and was most upset when Mum found out about her background.Apparently her 2 mothers stayed in contact and Jemima was kept informed about Mum's progress for some time. However The Murwillumbah siblings knew nothing about Mum until i contacted them. We believe that the Dean parents may have tried to get Mum back some years after and would have been refused by the Courts. I am lucky to have found them and to have 2 families on my Mum's side!!
You are correct that Siddie married Grace in Murwillumbah; but not sure about the others' marriages.
So hope i have not bored you with all the details. As i said Charles apparently was born around 1845 in Wells; married ? 186?? to Jane Partis and had one child prior to leaving for Australia. If you are able to find out any more than that I would be very grateful.
I have been able to obtain records of Perry family back a few generations due to finding some other people on Ancestry.com who are also connected.
Thanks again,
Robyne
