MacGregors, Wm. Turk and Brig o'Turk Scotland
I have a mystery to solve. The yDNA Project for my Turk family indicated that I am a descendent of the MacGregors , most likely from the Brig o’Turk families who had to assume new surnames in the 1600’s when the MacGregor name was banned. The info I was given by two sources states that a group of MacGregors who settled in the Brig O’Turk area changed their name to Turk or MacTurk.By approximately 1770 some of them had relocated to Antrim Northern Ireland. The earliest relative found in my family line is William Turk (of Antrim, N. Ireland) born approximately 1770, and married Sarah Morse. Their first child, Ephraim H., was born in 1791 and eventually married Maria Moore. They relocated to Pennsylvania, US.Ephraim then moved his family to Wisconsin. He had a son, James who had a son James Marion.I include this info to clarify which William Turk I am referring to.The mystery is that I have no factual evidence to prove that William Turk was actually a MacGregorwhose great grandfather assumed the Turk name as a result of where he was residing (Brig o’Turk).I would be very grateful if someone could help me connect William Turk of Antrim N. Ireland to the MacGregors of Brig o’Turk Scotland or if there is proof that MacGregors actually changed their name to Turk.
