Hi Stevi,

As you already have the 1861 census then you know other children were

Ann age 19, born Sutherlandshire,

Catherine age 12, born Sutherlandshire,

John age 10, born Sutherlandshire,

and Jean age , 4, born Wick.

Jemima age 6, was born Wick.

Mother Margaret age 52, was born Sutherlandshire.

With knowing these ages I looked for the family in 1851 as the father should be with them.

1851 HELENSDALE, HELMSDALE, SUTHERLANDSHIRE
SUTHERLAND
Margaret, age 35, laboruer's wife, born Kildonan, Sutherlandshire

Sarah, daughter, age 17, born Tatheron, Caithness

Betty, daughter, age 14, born Tatheron, Caithness

Ann, daughter, age 8, born Helensdale, Sutherlandshire

Catherine, daughter, age 3, born Helensdale, Sutherlandshire

John, son, age 2 months, born Helensdale, Sutherlandshire

** while Margaret's age is 35 and in 1861 she is shown 52 that is really not that unusual as ages seem to vary a lot from census to census for many people.

The names and ages and places of birth fit for the 3 youngest children - the older children were likely married by 1861.

One again the father is not with them - so he was likely one of those men who worked out and perhaps traveled to work.

I have tried to f ind the family in 1841 but had no luck. I could not find a family with two daughters right ages to be Sarah and Betty.

The only thing I can think of to help you would be for you to look for Jemima's birth on scotlandspeople.org
You know about when she was born and where so she should be fairly easy to find and the record should show both parents names.

I was hoping to find them in 1871 and hoping her father would be with them, but I have had no luck with that either.

Do you know if the family stayed in Caithness or even in Scotland? Could they have gone elsewhere?

Jemima seems a little young to be married by 1871 - she would be about 16 but that is not out of the question.

If you have any more info that would help to find them let me know.

Carolyn L
